My Review On The NEW GOTY 2023!

 

Hello everyone! I hope you are having a great Taco Tuesday! I don't know why that's how I decided to start this blog post 😅 What can I say, I guess I just really love tacos <3 Anyway! On to what this post is really about. Today I will be reviewing Kavi! The GOTY 2023! I know I'm a bit late to this, but I wanted to spend extra time on this one since it's a pretty big deal in the AG doll community. Now without further ado, let's get started!

Now I want to start this off by saying I have literally been wanting a theater kid/Broadway star as a GOTY for years! And so the fact that they finally have one is very exciting to me! So if this is your first time hearing about Kavi, and you literally have no idea what I'm talking about, let's dive into her story, shall we?

Kavi Sharma is the very first ever South Asian GOTY! She's from New Jersey, and is an incredibly talented 12- year old. She loves to sing and dance, and her favorite place in the world is New York City. Her biggest dream is to be on Broadway one day. Kavi has partnered with the award winning theater arts program, called Camp Broadway. Kavi is here to inspire kids to have courage and confidence, through it all! And to never stop believing in your dreams, no matter how far away they might be. 

Now that you have a brief description on Kavi, and what her story is all about. Let's get on with my thoughts on her!

Kavi is a pretty doll, but one of the things that I immediately thought when I first saw her is that I feel as though she is a bit basic looking. I understand that American Girl is trying to include more cultures and ethnicities, which I think is incredible! I mean, you wouldn't want just a bunch of dolls who all look the same, blonde hair, blue eyes, and light skin. It's boring, and also incredibly racist. Just because you're including much more diversity in your company, doesn't mean all your dolls have to look the same. Now if you're a bit confused, don't worry, I'm getting to my point. I think Kavi would've looked much more interesting if they had changed her face mold. I feel like back in the day AG was really good at making lots, and lots of face molds for almost every GOTY, especially if they were of a different race. But I feel like now they're all started to look the same, you know? Please tell me I'm not crazy! But she is still a very pretty doll, so I'm not too disappointed.

Sorry about all that 🤭 I just get really passionate about AG, sometimes. Anyway! Another thing that I didn't like a whole lot about Kavi, is her meet outfit :( I just feel like nothing goes together, and I don't particularly like any of the pieces individually, either. Except! For those pink high tops! Gosh, those are really cute <3

So when I was doing more research, trying to find more information on Kavi's story (which no one seems to know much about, for whatever reason) I came across this on her page on AG's website. I'm sorry to be so brutal, but her story sounds so, so, so boring! Like when I heard Kavi was a quote on quote 'theater kid' I expected her story to consist of her journey to Broadway, or her struggle with stage fright, even though she loves to preform. You know, something along those lines. But not THIS! Like come on! That has got to be the most boring story, ever! I mean I guess it's a possibility that the way they phrased it just makes it sound boring, and maybe I shouldn't judge before I read her book, but still...What do you guys think?

I do! However, like that that she has best friends, who you can actually buy, as dolls! I really miss the best friend line, from both the GOTY and the Historical dolls. So I'm glad they're including them, this year. I hope that they keep coming out with best friend and sibling dolls for the GOTY in the upcoming years :)

At this point I'm just going to exclude the price tags, in this review, because we all know that almost all of American Girl's products are overpriced anyway. So I have very mixed emotions about this set. I think all of the items are cute, but I don't think I would choose to purchase this product. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I feel very meh about it, you know? I just don't particularly like or dislike it. But I am curious as to what you guys think about it!

Kavi's Bollywood Dance Costume for 18-inch Dolls $45.00

This outfit includes:

- A red and blue skirt with gold detail

- A gold tikka with colorful detailing that attaches to a red sheer dupatta with more gold accents

- A beautiful blue sequin top with gold detail

- A gold necklace and matching cuffs

- And lastly, bindi stickers, that pair perfectly with matching gold earrings, and nail stickers

I think this outfit set is so gorgeous! 😍 And the colors go so well together! The only complaint I have is that the red dupatta isn't the same shade of red as the skirt, and that just bothers me a bit. Otherwise I think it's an adorable outfit, definitely worth buying! (in my opinion)

Kavis's Backstage Trunk for 18-inch Dolls $125.00

This set includes:

- A travel-sized black trunk with gold, holographic, pink, and purple details, as well as added storage

- Stickers

- A pink sequin jacket with a black shiny collar

- A silver metallic baseball hat with a matching pair of shoes

- A pair of black glittery tights

- A pair of pink shiny fingerless gloves

- A pink tulle boa

- A classy black leotard with beautiful rhinestones

- And a sparkly fringe skirt

This set is so cute!!! I especially love the sequin jacket <3 I think that would look amazing for a nighttime photoshoot! Don't you think? The trunk seems to have a decent amount of space for things and it comes with lots of accessories. But is it worth $125? I think not. But it's still very cute, and is a great addition to Kavi's collection :)

Kavi's Performance Outfit for 18-inch Dolls $40.00

This outfit includes:

- A multicolored fur jacket 

- A multicolored sequin top

- A pair of light pink 'flare' pants

- A pair of pretty purple platform sandals

- And a silver sparkly star barrette

I think this outfit is very cute <3 My favorite item is definitely the fur jacket though! Like come on, how stinking cute! I will say that I don't think that the sequin top (though it is cute) really matches the rest of the outfit, you know what I'm saying? Also! I put flare in quotes because I really don't think the pants are flares. To me, anyway. Another thing I should mention is don't you think her outfit is a bit plain for a performance? I mean I guess it would depend on what type of performance you're doing, but if we're talking Broadway, then you would think she would dress up a bit, you know? I don't know, maybe I'm just too fancy 😅

Kavi's Songwriting Accessories for 18-inch Dolls $115.00

This set includes:

- A mini keyboard that actually play music!

- A drum pad with a set of drumsticks

- A teal laptop

- A transparent purple desk with a matching stool

- Lastly, a pair of headphones and an adjustable microphone

I like the initial idea of this set, but to me the transparent design just makes it look cheap. Also, I feel like some of the electronics should've had more realistic colors, and that would have helped, a lot. It is cool that the keyboard can play all different types of music, but to me you're just not getting your money's worth.

Now even though this set is crazy expensive, it does come with a ton of accessories, and it's super cute <3 One thing that American Girl never lacks is their attention to detail. That's for sure! I don't have much else to comment on, because overall i don't have anything I dislike about this set, besides the big price tag ;) My favorite item is definitely the vanity <3 I mean come on! It plays music and lights up!

Kavi's Shining Star Pajamas for 18-inch Dolls $28.00

This outfit includes:

- A navy blue top with a rainbow graphic design on the front

- A matching navy blue pants with a pretty rainbow star pattern

- And lastly, a pair of rainbow fur slippers

Yet another very cute outfit! Honestly most of Kavi's collection is slaying, so far <3 These pajamas are definitely giving me McKenna Brookes vibes, which I'm not mad about! The slippers are for sure the best part about this outfit, though 😍 Also the navy blue color looks really nice with Kavi's skin complexion, and in general it's just a very pretty color! I should mention that these pajamas are also available for kids! So if you want to match your doll, go ham! Overall, I really like this outfit, and I don't have any complaints, really

Kavi's Dog $34.00

This set includes:

- Scamper, a plush dog with black and white fur

- A pink collar attached to a matching leash

- And a pink bowl of dog food

I mean how can you say any bad things about a product that includes a cute little doggo 🥰 Honestly though, Scamper is a very cute dog, and he looks very well designed! I love the way they sculpted his ears <3 I also appreciate how Scamper is a boy dog, and yet they still gave him pink accessories, good for you AG! I only have one complaint, and that is I wish they would've had the collar and leash be separate items, instead of being stitched together, or at least give the collar and leash some pazzaz! You know? I feel like they could've added something, even just a tiny gemstone.

Kavi's Yoga Outfit for 18-inch Dolls $32.00

This outfit includes:

- A lime green tank top with a graphic elephant and purple trim

- Lime green and purple patterned leggings

- A cropped purple cardigan

- And a lime green sport headband

Another slay! Honestly the yoga outfit, and accessories, that we will get to next, are pretty up there when it comes to my favorite pieces in Kavi's collection. I think this outfit is super cute <3 I love all the pieces of the outfit, they all go so well together! But, you guessed it, I do have one complaint. I'm not the biggest fan of the color scheme :( The plum like purple color is super pretty, and honestly doesn't go that badly with the lime green color, I just don't like lime green. And the lime green color on the outfit itself isn't too bad, but the headband is just so loud! It almost doesn't seem like the same green color as the rest, it's that bright. It is still very cute though <3

This set includes:

- A purple yoga mat with a green straps for easy transportation

Eep! This accessory set is so stinking cute! I love yoga <3 And my Mom is a yoga teacher so this set feels very close to home :) American Girl really knows how to get people's money, because if they put out any kind of set with teeny tiny pieces, anyone will buy that product! Again, I'm not the biggest fan of the lime green, but otherwise I think this set is super cute!

That is pretty much all of Kavi's collection! Overall I think Kavi is a cute doll, and the idea of her story is interesting, I just think the execution was bad, and they definitely could have made the story WAY more interesting. Even though I did like Corinne, and Kavi's pretty alright. I just feel as though American Girl has been slacking with their overall designs and products lately, especially with the GOTY. They seemed to put a lot more effort in previous years, and they seem to repeat a lot of ideas, now. I probably will always get somewhat disappointed each year for the new GOTY because there's so much hype around who she's going to be. Also! Who thinks the next GOTY should be trans or maybe they could even make one who's a boy! But then you'd have to call it BOTY, which would be a bit weird 😅 Anyway!
